JR and Timothée Chalamet come together for a pre-Met Gala performance at the Frick Collection

September 13, 2021

After two years of absence, the Met Gala has made its comeback on Monday, September 13. On this occasion, JR took over the Frick Collection along with Timothée Chalamet for a very special performance.

JR created various large-scale pastings placed on the floors of the museum, as well as photographs printed and installed across doorways. While the images on the floor gave the illusion of deep rifts, reminiscent of JR's latest projects in Rome, Florence and Paris, the doorway notably held an image that referenced the American flag. In the words of JR, ‘“We enter in an American flag, to find a place, an identity, a position, a future, between the stripes and the stars. To get to the end [of the museum], we need to confront our rifts, our flaws, those of our nation, of our family, and our own cracks which have been amplified by two years of loneliness, anger, fear, confrontation.”

The video of the performance, which was released live on Timothée Chalamet's Instagram account, follows the actor walking through the museum in quiet contemplation of the collection, and later as he makes his way to the MET along with JR.
