Greetings from Giza, a new monumental installation at the Pyramid of Khafre

October 21 - November 17, 2021

JR was invited by Art D'Egypte to participate in the festival Forever is Now, which brings contemporary art to antique sites. He decided to intervene on the Pyramid of Khafre and created the trompe-l'oeil Greetings from Giza, made of mesh and a steel structure. The famous pyramid was constructed in 2570 B.C. and serves as the tomb of the Fourth-Dynasty Pharaoh Khafre. The installation will remain visible until November 17.

For Greetings from Giza, JR once again used the anamorphosis technique, in the spirit of the installations he did at the Louvre in 2016, when he made the Pyramid disappear, and in 2019 when he revealed the Secret of the Louvre Pyramid using 2000 stripes of paper. More recent anamorphosis installations include La Ferita on the façade of the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Les Falaises du Trocadéro in Paris, and Punto di Fuga, still visible on the façade of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome.

At the same time and for the first time, JR releases an NFT collection. Greetings from Giza is a multi-layered collection that blurs the lines between public and digital spaces, inviting the audience to not only own a piece of the actual image that creates the installation, but also become part of the artwork. The piece Greetings from Giza has been divided into 4,591 NFTs - a number which echoes the age of the pyramid - that will be released on HENI.com with an application period that will last until October 28.

Each NFT is very similar to what JR's gigantic installations look like up close. Abstract, and yet when combined they recreate an image that makes sense within their environment.

Based on Sir Alan Gardiner's Sign List from 1927, a total of 743 hieroglyphs have been hidden inside the collection following the golden ration, which is present at the site of the Great Pyramid (but not Khafre). In addition to these 743 rarities, 5 very special NFTs will hide "hieroglyphs" created by JR.
