Inside Out Tehachapi

2022

In the years after the first two Tehachapi installations, many of the original participants moved down a level of security from Facility B to Facility C, in part due to the good behavior exhibited when creating the pastings. Having witnessed the value of collaborative art within Tehachapi, both the prison staff and JR were eager to create another project that involved even more of the incarcerated community.

JR and his team organized an Inside Out photobooth action, during which a camera truck entered the yard and the entire incarcerated population––all six hundred men living in Facility C––were welcomed to have their portrait taken. In the end, a total of 424 people took their photos in the Photobooth truck and saw them print out as larger-than-life portraits that were then pasted on the inner walls of the yard. Hear more about the participants' experiences here.

The Inside Out action is part of three installations created inside Tehachapi in April 2022.
