OMELIA CONTADINA, VENICE, ITALY, 2020
On the occasion of the screening of their film Omelia Contadina at the Venice Film Festival, JR and Alice Rohrwacher organized a new procession with the portraits of the peasants featured in the film.
Omelia Contadina was born out of the concern of JR and Alice Rohrwacher for the difficulties encountered by many small farmers and inhabitants of the Alfina plateau, in Italy.
The film denounces the decline of traditional agriculture in favor of monoculture, which gradually undermines existing landscapes and ecosystems.
As in Castel Giorgio and Onano in 2019, the silhouettes of the farmers were printed on large tarpaulins. This time, they were transported by a procession of boats on the canals of Venice to the basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore, in the south of the city.
The project is the subject of an exhibition at Galleria Continua, in San Gimignano, from September 26, 2020 to May 2, 2021.
