TEHACHAPI, MOUNTAIN, CALIFORNIA, USA, 2020
In February 2020, JR returned to the California Correctional Institution of Tehachapi to continue his project by doing what he does best—creating powerful, large-scale pastings. Inspired by the Tehachapi Mountains, which lie just beyond the complex’s central yard, JR worked with volunteers from the prison's incarcerated population to conjure up a wheat-pasted mountain range across the surface of the courtyard's inner wall. For a time, the natural view was no longer obstructed; the wall disappeared, offering the incarcerated population a sweeping rocky mountainscape.
The project is the subject of an exhibition at Perrotin Paris from August 29 to October 10, 2020.
